Noriko is the leading female in Kanata Kara. She is a wistful girl who finds a tendency to talk when she feels confused or embarrassed. Noriko was an average highschool student in Japan and her father wrote Science Fiction stores. She begun to have strange dreams about a weird land. One day after school, she chases a ball that bounces off a paper bag and explodes. It was a terrorist bomb and Noriko is wisked away. Before she disappears, she sees her friends talking to police and explaining what they saw. After landing in the Sea of Trees on golden moss, a mysterious man named Izark saves her. In the new land she has found herself in, they do not speak Japanese.
Throughout the manga we can see her actually trying to learn the language, instead of magically knowing it when she arrived. It is more-than-likely this attention to detail which makes her particularly endearing. She tries to fit in, while earnestly trying to learn as many words as possible. Unknown to Noriko, she is the 'Awakening', 'The Light' or 'Hikari'. Izark plans on killing her at first but holds back, deciding to show mercy and kill her once she understands the situation she is in. Meanwhile, Noriko follows Izark around like a chick to a hen. After awhile, Noriko and Izark fall in love and work to change both their fates and destinies.
